16+ Extra Careers Event

At this time of year, schools go back after summer, students begin their college courses or get ready to go south to university.  Others will have been working for some time or have started apprenticeships.  There are always a few young people who have missed out for a variety of reasons and are still wondering what to do

This year the Shetland Islands Council’s 16+ Learning Partnership, whose aim is to ensure that all young people have an offer of learning beyond school, have organised a special event for such young people who have yet to find an opportunity.

The event will be held in Islesburgh Complex on Friday 27th August between1pm and 4pm. All young people from 16 to 19 who have not found work, training or a place in college are welcome to attend.  Parents and carers are invited too. Workshops will also be available on the day with a CV/Applications Workshop from 1.30pm – 2pm and an Interview Skills Workshop 2pm – 2.30pm.

Participating on the day will be representatives from Train Shetland, NAFC Marine Centre, Shetland College UHI, The Bridges project, Get Ready for Work, Voluntary Action Shetland and Adult Learning along with others to show case what may be on offer.  Individuals can have private conversations with the agencies and organisations there – no obligation.

Spokesperson for Education and Young People, Cllr Bill Manson said “16+ Learning Choices is a part of Curriculum for Excellence.  It is for every young person and gives particular attention to those who are at risk of not achieving their own targets.  Here in Shetland partners have collaborated to provide the right learning and support to assist those young people who have left school but are unsure of what to do next.  This event provides them a superb opportunity to discuss what they would like to do and get help to access it.”

The event is organised on behalf of the partnership by Skills Development Scotland and Careers Advisers will be there to offer additional information, guidance and support.  For further information about the event contact;
