Glasgow is hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) Scotland wants to ensure that we are providing support to groups who want to benefit from this once in a lifetime opportunity for people and communities across Scotland.
To do this BIG has developed a new funding programme, 2014 Communities, which is focused on building a legacy of well-being before and beyond the Commonwealth Games. 2014 Communities is a micro grant programme aimed at grass roots sports and community organisations. Through the programme BIG hopes to encourage more people to take part in sport or physical activity, and to increase the numbers of those volunteering in sport or physical activity, and to bring communities together through sport and volunteering.
Youth Development Worker Martin Summers said “This project came about after we took several members down to attend Sport & Leisure’s / Active Schools Dance Mat Launch Day. A number of the members commented on how much they enjoyed the dance workshops on offer. At Brae Youth Club we strive to provide an informal, interactive and interesting programme to allow young people to become successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen and an effective contributor. We are delighted to be able to offer these workshops.”
Dance instructor Heather Gordon said “I am really looking forward to beginning the workshops and hope they will provide the young people of Brae and the surrounding area with a new and exciting activity.”
Spokesman for Children & Young People Councillor Bill Manson said “These are out-of-school activities, but which link well with Curriculum for Excellence and contribute to its outcomes by encouragingan active and healthy lifestyle.”
Tavish Scott MSP said “This sounds both enjoyable and energetic, so should more than meet the 2014 Communities programme aim, of encouraging physical activity, in a very painless way.
