Burravoe Primary School to stay open

The Scottish Government has today informed Shetland Islands Council’s Children’s Service that the closure of Burravoe Primary School cannot go ahead.

Education provision at Burravoe Primary School will now continue. The decision made by Shetland Islands Council on 17 May 2011 that education be discontinued with effect from 07 October 2011 with continuing their education at Mid Yell Junior High from 26 October 2011, will not be implemented. This is in accordance with The Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010.

Councillor Betty Fullerton, Chair of the Education and Families Committee said of the decision, “This was always a decision that was within the gift of the Scottish ministers to make. I can imagine staff, pupils and the community will be very pleased with the decision. The uncertainty has been removed and we can all start to plan for the future”.
