Buying a used car? Know your consumer rights

Covers of the two car bookletsTrading Standards and the Office of Fair Trading have launched a new campaign to inform people about their consumer rights when buying a used car, and what to do if they encounter problems after purchase.

In Shetland, as in the rest of the UK, problems with used cars continue to provide a significant proportion of the complaints about consumer issues.

The new Know Your Consumer Rights advice is available from the Council's website at www.shetland.gov.uk/tradingstandards, including a short film about what to look about for when shopping for a used car.

There are also two useful booklets on this subject available free of charge from Trading Standards.

On the Road - A guide to buying your first car is the perfect read for a young driver and covers a wide range of topics, from learning to drive to maintaining your car.

The Car Buyers' Guide & Scorecard is a useful tool to help anyone who is planning to buy a used car to make an informed choice before parting with their money. It's full of helpful hints, sound advice and check sheets to use when assessing a vehicle, which will help you decide whether to go ahead with the purchase or to walk away.

Both booklets are available to pick upfrom the Council's Grantfield office. Email trading.standards@shetland.gov.uk or call 01595 744887 to get a copy posted out.
