Public Sector organisations are leading the way in carbon reduction

Shetland’s Public Sector is marking World Environment Day by pledging to reduce their carbon emissions. The annual Environment Day was established to increase environmental awareness and this year the Shetland Amenity Trust, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Fire and Rescue Service, the Northern Constabulary, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, NAFC Marine Centre, Shetland Islands Council, NHS Shetland and Skills Development Scotland have all committed to reducing their carbon emissions.

A Carbon Summit held in March and co-organised by the Shetland Amenity Trust and the Community Planning Partnership, inspired the organisations to strive to reduce their carbon emissions. Chief Scientific Advisor for Scotland, Professor Anne Glover was the keynote speaker with other contributions from Tavish Scott MSP, Alistair Carmichael MP, SNH and the Carbon Trust.

The Summit aimed to provide local public sector organisations with information on climate change and to introduce them to the help and support available to implement carbon reduction initiatives. This is particularly important as Scottish Government legislation places a duty on all public bodies to contribute to the delivery of it’s world leading carbon reduction targets.

Harriet Bolt, Carbon Reduction Officer at the Shetland Amenity Trust, said: “We’re delighted that the Summit inspired so many public sector organisations to lead by example in terms of carbon reduction. It’s a very important consideration for the long-term viability of our community.”

Carbon Reduction Shetland is committed to reducing Shetlands carbon footprint, including the provision of free information and advice to organisations and businesses seeking to reduce their carbon emissions.
