Exam Results 2010

The Schools Service has now received the 2010 exam results from the Scottish Qualifications Authority and a first look at the figures indicates another very good set of results for Shetland schools.

In total, 655 candidates were presented for the exams.  Compared with 2009, there has been an overall slight decrease in the total number of subject presentations, from 3888 to 3689.  The number of presentations at Higher Grade is down from 887 to 837 and the number of presentations at Standard Grade is also down by a small amount, from 2075 in 2009 to 2068 in 2010.

Initial analysis of the data, however, indicates that the high standards of previous years continue to be maintained.  For example, 58% of candidates sitting Standard Grades achieved a Credit grade (grade 1 or 2), compared with 56% in 2009.

82% of candidates sitting Intermediate 2 qualifications achieved a C grade or better in at least one subject compared with 80% in 2009.  There was a 4% increase in those achieving an A grade at Intermediate 2.

80% of candidates sitting Highers achieved at least one C grade or better in at least one subject compared with 79% last year.  As with Standard Grade and Intermediate 2, there was an increase at the upper end, with 34 more candidates, 5% of the total, achieving an A grade compared with 2009.

There was also a 5% increase in the numbers of those attaining an A grade at Advanced Higher.  The numbers of those taking Advanced Higher remained steady, with the same number of entries (105) as last year.

Councillor Gussie Angus, Chair of Services Committee, said he was delighted with the results of this year’s exams, which showed consistent improvement, particularly in those attaining the top grades at all levels.  He wanted to congratulate all the young folk and staff who had obviously worked very hard throughout last session to gain these good results.
