Press Release
Go Real Together!
Shetland Islands Council’s Waste Service will be supporting the 14th annual Real Nappy Week from April 26 – 2 May 2010.
Real Nappies are promoted across the UK, predominantly because of their environmental and financial benefits. Currently the UK throws away 3 billion disposables every year with 90% going to landfill.
Real Nappies can be up to 40% better for the environment than using disposables, helping parents actively combat their carbon footprint. In addition parents can save at least £500 per child in Real Nappies, an important saving in the current economic climate. Real Nappies are also championed by many parents who favour the soft comfortable fabrics as well as the fun and functional designs.
Shetland Islands Council will be joining in Real Nappy Week by holding a Nappuccino Coffee afternoon in the Town Hall from 1-3pm on Friday 30 April. This will provide a chance for people who are interested in finding out about real nappies to come along and get information on modern real nappy use. Waste Prevention Officers will be on hand to offer advice and answer questions about Real Nappies and the Council run money back incentive scheme. A local real nappy agent will also be present with a range of example nappies. A play area will also be provided for children.
Shetland Islands Council Environmental spokesperson Jim Henry commented:
Using real nappies is an excellent example of waste prevention that is saving use of resources as well as delivering real savings into the pockets of young families.
Organised by Go Real, the Real Nappy Information Service, Real Nappy Week 2010 will be a truly interactive event encouraging people across the world to Go Real Together! Through innovative use of social and digital media Go Real aim to help create an international community of Real Nappy users.
Not only will events take place across the UK, but they will also be available online, through video and audio content, photos, blogs, tweets and webinars. An interactive map available on the Go Real website will track the events of the week and allow people to easily find out what’s going on in their area and around the world.
Jon Rolls, Chief Executive of Go Real, commented:
“We’re trying to make Real Nappy Week as fun and accessible as possible and using social media sites is opening up all sorts of opportunities. We get to be really creative, and it means that everyone can take part, regardless of where they live!”
Go Real will launch the week with the World’s Largest Nappuccino, which will be taking place at the internationally renowned Eden Project in Cornwall and be live streamed through the Go Real website.
Jane Mellowship, a new mother using Real Nappies, said:
“I’m really interested in the events that are taking place during Real Nappy Week and see it as an ideal opportunity to learn more about them, but living in a remote area it’s hard for me to actually get to them. I’m really excited that I’ll be able to watch what’s going on from home, and I’m looking forward to chatting with other Real Nappy users online. It will be great to be able to share my experiences and talk with other like minded people!”
