Press Release
Shetland Hamefarin 2010
On behalf of the Shetland Hamefarin Committee 2010, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone in Shetland who helped to make the Hamefarin such a resounding success. 683 people registered for the Hamefarin and we know that many more came to Shetland for the festivities and did not register. This means that the golden anniversary of the original Hamefarin has been one of the biggest events that this community has ever staged. It has been an event that will be remembered fondly for a very long time, and this is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of so many: the various history groups; clubs and associations; the tour guides; coach drivers; the staff at Islesburgh Community Centre, Clickimin, the new Museum and Archives and the Council; the Up Helly Aa Committee, galley builders, torch makers and all the guizers; event organisers; entertainers; authors; the media; accommodation providers; everyone associated with the Flavour of Shetland event, and a host of other people who have contributed. The scale of the effort has been enormous.
Throughout the past few weeks Hamefarers have been met with good humour and warm welcomes, be they returning kin or new-found friends. I am deeply proud to say that the Hamefarin has brought out the best in Shetland and shows how strong our community spirit is.
Well done everybody.
