Leader wishes Councillor best for future

Shetland Islands Council political leader Josie Simpson today (Tuesday) wished Councillor Iris Hawkins all the best as she leaves the council at the end of the week.
“I think I speak for the whole council in paying tribute to the tremendous job Iris has done for Scalloway and the Central Ward over the years,” he said. “She has faithfully represented her constituents while taking a very senior role in the council, latterly as chair of the environment and transport committee. We wish her all the best and congratulate her on her forthcoming marriage.”
Arrangements for a by-election will now be made, with a legal obligation for the poll to take place within three months of Councillor Hawkins’ resignation. The election is likely to take place in seven to eight weeks, possibly in the early part of December.
The new Central Ward representative will be in post for five months, prior to the council elections in May, although eight weeks of that period is set aside for campaigning.
