Sandness Hall is having its official re-opening on Saturday 22 October to celebrate the completion of its upgrade.  The event marks the culmination of nearly 10 years of work by the Hall Committee, planning and raising funds.

The hall has been closed for the past 6 months.  To celebrate the completion of work there will be a buffet dance with music from the Cullivoe Dance Band.

The improvements include the creation of a new fully accessible entrance, upgraded toilets and the provision of a meeting space/clubroom type area.  The hall’s electrics and plumbing have also been replaced, and the hall redecorated.

Hall Committee Chairman, Donald MacLeod is glad to see these much needed improvements to the hall.

“I am delighted with the outcome” said Mr MacLeod, “the building was so cold before you could see your breath in the air, but that’s a distant memory now”.

As well as being a more comfortable place to be, the hall’s new layout means that it is more flexible and accessible than it was before.

“It’s a much better use of the space” said Mr MacLeod, “I am looking forward to celebrating the re-opening on Saturday and making use of the upgraded hall”.

The total cost of the refurbishment was approximately £169,000, which the Council awarded a Capital Grant of £21,280 towards.  The SIC also part funded the feasibility and design costs of this project.

The Hall Committee, with the help of the Grants Unit and Community Work service, were successful in securing external funding of over £144,000 from the Scottish Rural Development Programme with the balance of funds raised by the local community.
