Shetland Islands Council’s Sport and Leisure Service has this year joined The Shetland Times and Shetland Recreational Trust to support the fifth annual Shetland Sports Awards to be held on Friday 18 November at the Clickimin Leisure Complex.

The awards recognise athletic performance and coaching talent.  Members of the public can vote for their choice and come along and be part of an evening of celebration with Shetland’s top sportspeople.

The categories are: sportsperson of the year, young sportsperson of the year, coach of the year, team of the year and young team of the year, and lifetime endeavour award.

A coupon for nominations can be found on page 2 of this week’s Shetland Times and should be filled in and returned to the address given. Alternatively, you can make your nominations by emailing: editorial@shetlandtimes.co.uk

The closing date for nominations is Monday 7 November.

This year promises to be a truly magical evening with visiting Ukrainian Olympic gymnasts Iryna Krasnianska and Dariya Zgoba performing a routine in the midst of diners in the Bowls Hall.

James Johnston, Active Schools Manager with the Sport and Leisure Service said:

“We are delighted to add further support to this well established event. It is our intention to bring the Shetland Sports Awards to an even wider audience and to encourage nominations from our partners in schools and clubs.

“It is essential that we recognise the efforts and performances of our athletes and coaches in all sports and acknowledge the influence they have in developing the next generation of athletes and dedicated sports volunteers.”

Last year fencer Chris Rocks was named sportsperson of the year while his coach Andy Alderman was coach of the year. The other winners were the senior inter-county badminton team (team of the year), the Anderson High School netball team (young team of the year) and swimmer Felix Gifford (young sportsperson of the year).

Given Shetland’s remarkable success in the NatWest Island Games in the Isle of Wight during the summer and at other events and competitions through 2011, this year’s event promises to be very exciting.
