Olnafirth Primary Sculpture Launch

Olnafirth Primary is hosting a launch on Wednesday 16 June to celebrate 5 beautiful new sculptures inspired by Fair Isle Berets.  These stunning objects covered in colourful mosaics are to be found in the grassy patch at the back of the school.   Having been based on Fair Isle, there are now Fair Isle berets being designed by local knitters to match the sculptures!  These will also be shown at the launch.

The idea began as a wish by pupils to improve the playground.  Brighton artist Kay Aplin, who specialises in public art, was commissioned as lead artist in January.  Kay may have led the process but it has been a real team effort with pupils, parents, teachers and volunteers from the community all working hard to design and make the sculptures.

Parents and Pupils at Workshop

Teacher Madge Gregg Masterton found the project very worthwhile, ”We started this to improve the playground and in the process pupils have learned about commissioning artists, sculpture and mosaics.  It has been great to work with parents and folk in the community too, it’s a lovely way to get together.”

The project has been assisted by SIC Schools Service Creative Links Team and is funded by Awards For All.  Councillor Rick Nickerson says,

“This is a great achievement for Olnafirth Primary and the Voe community.  We are keen to encourage more public art across Shetland.”

Everyone is welcome to come along to the launch on Wednesday 16 June at 7.30 pm to see the sculptures, the berets, meet Kay and all the artists!
