Public conversation on council cutbacks begins
Council spending – have YOUR say
People throughout the Isles are being invited to a series of public meetings on the issue of council budgets and the possible cutbacks being faced in the coming years.
Shetland Islands Council has determined to cut £26 million from council spending over the next two years. At each meeting councillors and officers will present the bare facts of the council’s financial situation and members of the public will have the opportunity to make suggestions for savings.
The Council’s interim Head of Finance Services, Hazel Sutherland said, “The bottom line is that we have to cut council spending considerably. £26 million is a lot of money, but we simply cannot afford to raid our reserves any further. These meetings are an opportunity for members of the Shetland public to have their say on how we spend and save their money.
“Each meeting will start at 7pm. With the scale of challenge we are facing, I think it’s really important we get a good turnout”.
