Press Release

Record Number of Tidy Businesses

Seventy-four local businesses in Shetland have received a Tidy Business Standards Award this past year.  “It’s very encouraging to see over seventy companies achieving an award, including thirty-three gaining the Gold level”.  SIC Environmental spokesman Councillor Jim Henry said this morning.  “It demonstrates the commitment local Shetland businesses’ have for reducing the impact they have on the environment.  I would like to congratulate the organisations that have held the award for a few years as well as all the newcomers to the Tidy Business Standards.”

At the same time as announcing the awards, the Council’s Environment & Energy announced that it has been short-listed for a “People and Places Award” from Keep Scotland Beautiful.  This is in recognition of the strong partnerships developed between the Council and the Shetland businesses and organisations involved with the Tidy Business Standards Awards.

Brydon Sinclair from the Council’s Environment & Energy Service said “The Service would like to take this opportunity to thank all the businesses and people involved in the award.  For others that may be interested in finding out more about the awards, or to apply to join the Tidy Business Standards, please contact us either phone 01595 744850 or email recycling@shetland.gov.uk.  We’re really proud to have been nominated for the award and have been given the chance to lead a workshop on the Tidy Business Standards at the Keep Scotland Beautiful annual conference this year being held in Glasgow.

16 Businesses gain Tidy Business Award

For the award, administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful, businesses must look at how they manage their waste, from how it is contained to what they are doing to reduce, reuse and recycle, as well as the cleanliness of their shop front.  This year businesses from across the isles, from Unst to Sumburgh, representing a wide range of industries and services gained recognition for their hard work with the environmental accreditation.
