Schools Service Launches Statutory Consultations

On Monday 30th August 2010, the Schools Service will begin three important statutory consultations which will help shape the future of education in Shetland.  These consultations will run for a period of six weeks, finishing on Sunday 10th October 2010.

As part of the Blueprint for Education, and following approval by Council on Wednesday 30th June 2010, statutory consultation will commence on the following proposals:

  • To discontinue secondary education at Skerries School, with proposed transfer of secondary pupils to the Anderson High School
  • To discontinue secondary education at Scalloway Junior High School, with proposed transfer of secondary pupils to the Anderson High School.

At the same time, Schools Service will also be consulting on the proposal to relocate the new Anderson High School from its current site at the Knab to a site at the Lower Staney Hill, Lerwick.

In line with the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010 notice will be given, in the local media, of all three consultations.  The notice provides a summary of the proposal, explains where the full proposal paper can be obtained, gives details of the public meetings which will be held, and explains how people can respond.

Further information will also be sent to relevant consultees for each proposal, to enable them to respond should they wish.

Schools Service welcomes all written responses to their proposals during the six-week consultation period.

Councillor Leslie Angus recognises there are important issues to be addressed in this community.  This statutory consultation will give the public an opportunity to have their say on the future shape of education in Shetland.
