Press Release

Shetland Recycles

On Saturday 10 December, between 10am and 2pm, staff from the Council’s Environment and Energy Service will be on hand at the Gremista Waste Management Facility and Recycling Centre, to offer tours of the site, answer questions on recycling within the isles, and provide households with free kerbside bags and calendars.

There is some confusion about the material collected for recycling in Shetland; this open day will provide interested islanders with the facts, including information on where recyclables go to and what happens to them afterwards.

Opened in April 2006, the Gremista site offers households from all across Shetland a free service to recycle materials or dispose of waste.  On the open day, visitors will be able to see round the sorting shed, the paper shredder, the civic amenity site, and the stockpiles of materials awaiting shipping.
