The Role of the Merchant Navy Across the Centuries
- A talk by Professor Gordon Milne OBE
Professor Gordon Milne OBE, founder member and Trustee of the Merchant Navy Memorial Trust, will deliver a lecture at Shetland Museum and Archives Auditorium on Thursday 17th March.
The Merchant Navy Memorial Trust was set up in 2009 to commemorate the sacrifice by Scottish Merchant Navy personnel in the two World Wars, other previous and subsequent times of conflict, and in peacetime service along the trading routes of the world.
Professor Milne’s lecture will examine the history of the Merchant Navy, with an emphasis on World War’s 1 and 2, and the establishment of the Scottish Merchant Navy Memorial at Leith in Edinburgh.
Professor Milne has family links with the North of Scotland and Shetland Steam Navigation Company. His visit to Shetland has been arranged by the Shetland branch of the Nautical Institute and has been supported financially and in kind by a number of local organisations including: Shetland Maritime; Shetland Museum and Archives; Lerwick Port Authority; Lerwick Community Council and North Atlantic Fisheries College.
Doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start on Thursday 17th March. The lecture will last approximately one hour, with additional time for questions.
