Meeting looks to the future for Tingwall and Girlsta
Twenty five local residents, business leaders and representatives of community groups from Tingwall and Girlsta attended a public meeting recently to form a steering group to take forward locally generated ideas and initiatives.
The public meeting organised by Shetland Islands Council Members Iris Hawkins, Betty Fullerton and Andrew Hughson supported by Community Work Officers heard from community representatives on issues such as footpaths, community safety, bairns’ facilities, public toilets and light pollution as well as airing aspirations for the area such as the new Tingwall Agricultural Museum and ideas for attracting new business and families in to the area.
Chair of the meeting, Betty Fullerton commented, “Most folk thought that Tingwall and Girlsta was a thriving and self reliant area. There is some scope though for improvements to the area and we have now formed a Steering Group to take these ideas forward. The meeting was an excellent opportunity for the Ward Elected Members to hear what issues are important to the community and for Community Work Officers to start to build a community profile for the area.”
A new Steering Group has been formed, supported by Community Work Officers and Chaired by Councillor Andrew Hughson, with a good cross section of the community volunteering to play an active role. The first meeting of the Steering Group is to take place on Monday 3 May 2010 at 6.30pm in the Tingwall Hall. Everyone is welcome and more information can be obtained from the Central & West Community Work Officer, Mick Clifton on 01595 745303.
