Press Release
a RIGHT blether
For a RIGHT blether to reach as many young people in Scotland as possible, and really make a difference, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People needs help.
We're looking for people or organisations who make decisions about, look after, care about, and work with children and young people in all aspects of their lives – at home, in school, and in their communities.
And we’d like you to play a vital role in rolling out a RIGHT blether across Scotland.
Shetland Islands Council Youth Service working alongside the School Service has formed a working group of staff to organise and promote this piece of work. Recently staff members of Youth Services visited Baltasound Junior High School to meet with the secondary pupils and run a number of workshops. The resource packs consist of workshops and supporting creative activities. The workshops contain ideas for drama, role play and games, and include more formal activities based on Curriculum for Excellence – plus a DVD. The workshops were:
- Me and my rights
- Me and my community
- Me and my learning
- Me at home
- Me and my Scotland
Workshops were well received and it is hoped to roll these out to other secondary schools once schools have returned from the summer holidays. The resources have been produced to ensure that all children and young people are well informed and ready to take part in the RIGHT blether vote in November – the national consultation that will directly influence the Commissioner’s priorities over the next four years.
Councillor Bill Manson said “It is very important for young people themselves and for all those who work with and around young people to encourage the young, to listen to them, to hear them, and to urge them to take part in the vote in November which should influence the commissioner in setting his priorities and work programme to reflect the feelings and needs expressed."
Head of the School Service, Helen Budge said “that this was a good example of how staff could work together across areas to deliver workshops for pupils in our schools.”
