“Circus Stars” a big hit with young Shetland readers

Almost 400 young readers aged between four and twelve have taken part in this summer’s “Circus Stars” Reading Challenge. The scheme, which was run by the Shetland Library in Lerwick, aimed to encourage youngsters to read six books over the school summer holidays.
Young People’s Services Librarian, Morag Nicolson, who organised the challenge with Library Assistant Catherine Mullay said “We thought the school holidays would be a good time to get bairns reading and have been really delighted with the response. The scheme had lots of exciting new books to choose from and weekly free gifts. We also ran competitions and had a circus performance from Bell and Bullock which seemed to go down really well”.
Recognising the fact that not all children were able to get to Lerwick to take part, Mrs Nicolson said “We’re keen to encourage as many youngsters as possible to take part, so this isn’t the end of the scheme. Not everyone could get to Lerwick so we’re going to roll it out in a number of rural schools during the autumn school term”.
