Excellent Primary School in Uyeasound

School inspectors visited Uyeasound Primary School in March 2010 and describe it as excellent in three areas:

  • Learners’ experiences
  • The Curriculum
  • Improvement through self –evaluation

Her Majesty’s Inspector Nick Pepin, who formerly taught in the North Mainland of Shetland, found that the school had also made very good improvements in performance and was very good at meeting learning needs”.

HMIe identified the school’s particular strengths:

  • Stimulating learning experiences provided for children
  • Outstanding progress made in embracing Curriculum for Excellence
  • Very strong and productive links with parents and the wider community
  • Innovative approaches to self-evaluation and improving the work of the school
  • Shared commitment to leading the school forward among all staff
  • The creative vision of the head teacher

There was only one area for improvement, which is to “Continue to improve the school as planned”.

There are 10 pupils in Uyeasound Primary and the school is managed by the Head Teacher, Kate Coutts.

Spokesperson for Education and Young People, Councillor Bill Manson said “Congratulations to Kate and the pupils of Uyeasound Primary School and all who back them up in whatever way.  This is by any standards an outstanding review and a credit to all concerned.”
