Kerbside Collection
Cans, glass, plastic bottles and newspapers are collected fortnightly for recycling in Lerwick and Scalloway. Please see the kerbside calendar for details of the fortnightly recycling collection, rolls of kerbside recycling sacks can be collected from the Infrastructure Services Office at Grantfield. Please put out recycling sacks alongside your black bags on your usual refuse collection day every 2 weeks as shown on the calendar.Stacking recycling bins are available for purchase from Infrastructure Services Office at Grantfield.
Kerbside Recycling Explained
Purple Sacks for Plastic Bottles These are for any plastic bottles, e.g. juice bottles, plastic milk cartons, bleach bottles. Please place ONLY plastic bottles in the purple sacks and no other types of plastic container like trays and tubs as these contain different plastics and contaminate the recycling collection.
Plastic bottles are baled and sent to a plastic factory for reprocessing into new plastic items.
Green Sacks for Glass These are for glass jars and bottles. Please do not place light bulbs or high temperate glass products such as Pyrex bowls in the sacks as they contaminate the recycling collection. Please wash out containers before placing them in the sacks.
Glass is taken to Enviroglass at Cunningsburgh where it is crushed and used in a variety of aggregate and filtration materials
Blue Sacks for Tins and Cans These are for food tins, drink cans, metal jar lids and aerosols. Please wash out food tins before placing them in the sack.
Cans are separated into aluminium and steel. They are then baled and sent to a recycling plant for reprocessing.
Clear Sacks for Newspaper These are for newspapers only, please do not put in other magazines or paper. If possible could you remove staples before placing in the sacks, as the paper is recycled into animal bedding.
Newspaper is taken to Rova Head sorting shed, shredded, baled and made available to the public within Shetland for animal bedding.
