Waste Awareness and Advice
Every year each person in Shetland produces around half a ton of waste. A lot of this waste is reusable or recyclable, and in some cases can be avoided altogether. Here we aim to show what can be done with waste materials other than simply placing them in the refuse bag for collection and disposal.
The Waste Hierarchy
The waste hierarchy shows the preferable order waste should be dealt with, with the optimum solution being waste prevention, then reuse, recycling, recovery and finally landfill. As you move down the hierarchy the environmental impact of the waste is increased.
