Schools Service launches Statutory Consultations

On Monday 10 January 2011, the Schools Service will begin another four statutory consultations which will help to shape the future of education in Shetland.  These consultations will run for a period of 35 school days, finishing on Sunday 13 March 2011.

As part of the Blueprint for Education, and following approval by Shetland Islands Council in June 2010, statutory consultation will commence on the following proposals:

  • To discontinue education at Uyeasound Primary School, with proposed transfer of pupils to Baltasound Junior High School Primary Department;
  • To discontinue education at Burravoe Primary School, with proposed transfer of pupils to Mid Yell Junior High School Primary Department;
  • To discontinue education at North Roe Primary School, with proposed transfer of pupils to Ollaberry Primary School or Urafirth Primary School;
  • To discontinue education at Sandness Primary School, with proposed transfer of pupils to Happyhansel Primary School or Aith Junior High School Primary Department.

In line with The Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010 notice will be given, in the local media, of all four consultations.  The notice provides a summary of the proposal, explains where the full proposal paper can be obtained, gives details of the public meetings will be held, and explains how people can respond.

Further information will also be sent to relevant consultees for each proposal, to enable them to respond should they wish.

The Schools Service welcomes all written responses to their proposals during the consultation period.

Chair of Services Committee, Councillor Leslie Angus said ‘these are the next planned statutory consultations that were approved by Shetland Islands Council in June.  This process gives everybody involved the opportunity to contribute their views’
