Charitable Status

Inland Revenue - Charitable Status

How to register:

The Inland Revenue do not have a standard application form for groups or organisations that want to register as a charity.   Instead organisations seeking to be recognised as a charity in Scotland must submit a written request to the Inland Revenue, and include the following information:

  • A copy of their governance document - i.e. constitution, deed of trust etc.
  • Written background information about the organisation detailing exactly what is does, activities and services provided etc.

Organisations should address charitable status applications to:

Inland Revenue Charities

C/o Meldrum House

15 Drumsheugh Gardens

Edinburgh

EH3 7UL

How to find your charity number:

Organisations who are already registered as a charity but need to confirm their charity number can do so by searching on the following website address:

www.oscr.org.uk

(This is the address for the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator, and there is useful information for charities including a Frequently Asked Questions section).

If you need to request a copy of your Charity Recognition Letter, you can do so by contacting the Inland Revenues Charity Office on 0131 777 4126.

For any other type of assistance in connection with charitable status, please contact the Inland Revenue at the following:
