Midnight Football Leagues are back
07 January 2008

The Bank of Scotland Midnight Football League starts up again in Lerwick on Saturday 12th January 2008, following the success of the programme last year.
Young people between the ages of 12 and 18 will have a chance to play indoor five-a-side football on Saturday nights at the Clickimin Leisure Centre from 10pm to 11pm. (Registration on the first night will take place from 9.30pm).
The programme will run for ten consecutive Saturdays, from12th January to 15th March, ending just before the schools' Easter break.
The Midnight Football League is sponsored nationally by the Bank of Scotland and is a joint initiative by the Scottish Football Association, local authorities and local police forces to reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviour.
Shetland first took part in the national programme in early 2007, where an average of around 30 or so teenagers turned out each week during the ten week programme. This year's programme will offer a similar format, with indoor five-a-side games organised for all those who come along. Bibs, balls and bottled water will again be provided free of charge.
Staff from the Council's Youth Work and Neighbourhood Support Teams and local police officers will be on hand to co-ordinate matches and to mix with youngsters each night.
The 2008 Midnight League in Shetland is sponsored by Bank of Scotland and supported by the Scottish Football Association, Shetland Islands Council, Northern Constabulary and Shetland Recreational Trust.
