SHETLAND SCHOOLS SAILING PROJECT 2007

BackgroundLaser dinghies

Sailing is a sport for life and Shetland has a long tradition of links with the sea and maritime recreation. This project aims to introduce school pupils across Shetland to the sport of sailing at their local boating club.

Last year's successful project saw over 250 pupils enjoy sailing across the isles. This year's expanded programme now takes in eight different boating clubs to cover new areas and include more young people.

The plan is to give everyone an introduction to dinghy sailing during a 2½ hour session, which will either take place in the morning, or the afternoon. All sessions will be led by a visiting RYA approved Senior Dinghy Instructor, with support from local dinghy instructors and sailors.

Everyone will get a certificate for attending, and an information pack. The minimum age to take part is 10 years old and the maximum is 16 years old.

What next..

You need to be up for a new experience, and be prepared to get wet. Bring along a towel and a complete dry change of clothing – especially footwear, such as an old pair of trainers. The Clubs will give you everything else you need to have a great time on the water!

You WILL need a parental consent form that is available for download here (127 Kb PDF file)

You MUST ask your parent/guardian to fill this out. Then make sure you bring it along to the Club - either at your first sailing session, or beforehand.

Remember…

You don’t have to be an olympic athlete, or even be good at sport. You just need to be a reasonably confident swimmer, be prepared to learn some new skills, and be up for some excitement!
