Economic Development Forum

Remit

Within the framework of the Shetland Community Plan, the Shetland Economic Development Forum will be responsible for –

• Developing, reviewing and maintaining Shetland’s local economic strategy (currently contained within the “Shetland 2012” document).

• Overseeing the implementation of the local economic strategy and monitoring its progress.

• Supporting sectoral initiatives contributing to the strategy.

• Co-ordinating the work of sectoral task forces and sub-groups.

• Encouraging the efficient and effective delivery of business services across Shetland.

• Ensuring that the views of the Shetland business community are reflected in the development and implementation of economic strategy and in the wider process of Community Planning.

• Reporting to the Scottish Executive, as required, in succession to the Shetland Local Economic Forum.
• To provide a discussion and consultation mechanism on all European Affairs in Shetland.

• To initiate and develop proposals for policy formulation or change, and to keep policies and the implementation of those policies within the remit of the Forum under review, such as the Council’s European Strategy.

• To inform on all European Union policies and legislation.

• To initiate and co-ordinate strategies for lobbying on measures which appear to disadvantage Shetland.

• To foster and maintain political links with appropriate European bodies, UK government departments and the European Committee of the Scottish Executives.

• To foster a partnership approach with local stakeholders towards funding opportunities.

• To monitor progress on EU legislation and new initiatives that are likely to affect local industry.

• To consider the outcome of Best Value Service Reviews for the European Unit, its policies and the delivery of the service.

• To provide a mechanism to assess performance against policies.
