Home & Fire Safety

The Highland & Islands Fire & Rescue Service and its community safety partners are promoting the offer of home fire safety risk assessments for all residents together with a smoke detector fitting scheme for the vulnerable. This involves local firefighters working with partner organisations to identify risk and issue guidance and if necessary, recommend control measures to remove or reduce the risk. The Brigade is targeting the elderly by working with carers in a risk assessment and referral initiative to improve the

safety and education of the elderly and their carers in Shetland.

"Message In A Bottle" Scheme

The “Message In A Bottle” Scheme is a voluntary scheme intended for use by anyone with a medical condition who feels vulnerable while living at home. The Scheme provides emergency services or other caring organisations with vital details of any conditions, medications or allergies or someone to contact should they be called to a home as a result of sudden illness or personal accident.

The Scheme works by storing the person(s) details in a plastic container, which is kept in their fridge. Two small stickers, unique to the Scheme and known to the emergency services and other care agencies, are attached within the house, one on an inside door or panel within the hallway and the other on the fridge door. If more than one member of the household is using the scheme all the forms are kept inside one container.

If you would like a bottle, which are free of charge, please contact Jenny Wylie - Community Safety Officer on 01595 744527. Alternately, supplies are available through your Health Centre or from a member of the Rotary Club of Shetland.
