The Community Office is located in the Old Library Centre, on the Lower Hillhead in Lerwick. The office is open between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday to Thursday and between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm on Fridays.
June Porter is the Community Work Officer for the area and works with the communities of Lerwick, Bressay and Gulberwick to help maintain and improve the quality of life by providing support to individuals, groups and community organisations across a wide range of aspects of community life.
Community Work is about strengthening local communities and supports people to become confident individuals, effective contributors, responsible citizens, and successful learners. The Community Work Officer provides support, information and advice to assist individuals, groups and communities to develop the skills, understanding and confidence to get involved in their community, tackle community issues and influence change.
This includes consulting with communities about issues that are important to them, assisting groups to develop ideas into viable projects, assisting groups to identify and secure funding, helping groups to plan, manage and assess their work effectively, and help to achieve their aims and aspirations.
