The Community Office is located in the Scalloway Public Hall, on Berry Road, Scalloway. The office is open between 9.00 am and 12.45 pm, Monday to Friday and by appointment at other times. The Community Worker also now hotdesks from Walls on a Friday.
Mick Clifton is the Community Work Officer for the area and works with the communities of Central & West Mainland. This area includes Burra, Trondra, Scalloway, Tingwall & Girlsta, Whiteness, Weisdale, Tresta, Bixter, Aith, Skeld, Walls & Sandness. The Isles of Foula and Papa Stour are also included in this area. A key responsiblity of this Post is to help maintain and improve the quality of life by providing support to individuals, groups and community organisations across a wide range of aspects of community life.
Community Work is about strengthening local communities and supports people to become confident individuals, effective contributors, responsible citizens, and successful learners. The Community Work Officer provides support, information and advice to assist individuals, groups and communities to develop the skills, understanding and confidence to get involved in their community, tackle community issues and influence change.
This includes consulting with communities about issues that are important to them, assisting groups to develop ideas into viable projects, assisting groups to identify and secure funding, helping groups to plan, manage and assess their work effectively, and help to achieve their aims and aspirations.
