Council House Rent

Rent Arrears

Here are some answers to some of the questions you may have if you owe rent.   The most important thing to remember is that things can be sorted out and help is available.

Q:   How can I sort out my rent arrears?

A:      The Income and Recovery Section deal with all debts owed to the Shetland Islands Council, so if you are falling behind with payments of Rent, Council Tax or any other type of Council debt contact us. We will make sensible instalment agreements, We are well aware that you can’t get blood out of a stone and will not make agreements you obviously can’t keep to.  We can even arrange a Benefits Health Check for you with the Citizens Advice Bureau, to ensure you are getting all benefits due to you.

Q:       What will happen if I fall behind with my rent?

A:      You could face eviction, eviction is seen as a last resort but unfortunately tenants are evicted every year.   You should contact Income and Recovery Staff at Finance immediately and let us know why you have fallen behind with your rent. Staff can try to set up an agreement with you to repay the arrears at an amount that will suit you.

Q:       What can I do to stop things getting worse?

A:      The most important thing is to get in touch immediately and either pay the arrears or make an agreement to pay the rent arrears and stick to that agreement.   You can also do the following:

Apply for Housing Benefit if you are on low income, A lot of people who think they won’t qualify do – so if in doubt apply.

Get help from an independent advisor e.g. Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) on 01595 694696.  Check with the CAB to see if you are getting all the welfare benefit to which you may be entitled.
