A Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence aims to achieve a transformation in education in Scotland by providing a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum from 3-18, firmly focussed on the needs of the child and young person. It is designed to help them to develop the four capacitites of:

  • Responsible Citizens
  • Successful Learners
  • Confident Individuals
  • Effective Contributors

All of the schools in Shetland are working towards the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. The assessment levels of the 5-14 guidelines will no longer be used, and children will be working towards learning outcomes that are described using 5 levels. These are:

  • Early: the pre-school years and P1 or later for some.
  • First: to the end of P4, but earlier or later for some.
  • Second: to the end of P7 but earlier or later for some.
  • Third and fourth: S1 to S3, but earlier for some. The fourth level broadly equates to SCQF level 4.
  • Senior Phase: S4 to S6 and college or other means of study.

The examinations framework is subject to change, with an announcement expected in the summer of 2009.
