Hungry For Success

Hungry for Success, a report of The Expert Panel on School Meals, was published in February 2003.

The report laid down the Scottish Nutrient Standards for School Lunches but also linked school meals with the curriculum as a key aspect of health education and health promotion.

Shetland Islands Council has received additional funding which has been used in a variety of ways to promote healthy eating.

Funding has been used to provide free fruit, at least 3 times a week, for all children in P1 and P2.

Schools have been able to invest in additional equipment eg bread machines, smoothie makers, toasters and juicers to enable them to offer healthier snacks for pupils.

Some schools have used the funding to support gardening projects so that children can experience eating food that they have grown themselves.

Larger items of equipment have been bought for some school kitchens so that school cooks are able to offer a wider range of healthy options in school cafeterias.

The Schools Service has worked closely with other Health Promoting Agencies for example NHS Shetland.

A new School (Health Promotion and Nutrition)(Scotland) Bill becomes law in March 2008 and Schools and the School Meals Service are working hard to ensure that we meet all the requirements of the new bill whilst maintaining the high quality service of which Shetland is justly proud.
