Emergency Planning

People with Animals

Dog, goldfish and catIn an emergency, your animals will still need to be cared for. You should plan what you will need for your animals in an emergency, in the same way that you would plan for yourselves. Additionally, if you need to evacuate your home and you cannot take your animals with you, you must have a plan of what to do with your animals and how they will be cared for if you are not in your home.

If you own animals, consider making arrangements with a neighbour, who is likely to be always in the area, to look after them should you be unable to return home.

Pets

You can get further advice on what to do with your pet in an emergency by discussing it with your vet or by contacting the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Farm Animals

You will need to consider how to move your animals in an emergency, where to and how they will be cared for when they get there.

The Emergency may involve animals, such as Foot and Mouth Disease and you will need to know what precautions to take, how to contain your animals and the procedure for the notification of such a disease.

Your vet will be able to help you with such information. Other organisations that should be able to help you are The Scottish Crofting Foundation (formerly the Scottish Crofters Union), The Crofters Commission or the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
