Emergency Planning
What the Council does during an Emergency
When an emergency occurs, one of the Emergency Services will declare it as an emergency and take the lead in coordinating the response. This will generally, but not always be the police.
When an emergency is declared, the Emergency Controller for the Council (usually the Head of Legal and Administrative Services) will invoke the Council Emergency Plan (pdf), which calls out an Emergency Team to assemble at an Emergency Control Centre.
The Emergency Team will then coordinate the response of the Council, with the other Emergency Services involved, to the emergency.
The importance of keeping the public informed through the media is recognised and arrangements are in place to provide public service announcements through Radio Shetland (92.7 FM) and SIBC (96.2 FM).
Information will also be posted on the Current Emergencies page of this website.
