Environment and Planning

In Shetland we take pride in maintaining our clean and natural environment. We can work with you, providing advice, promotion and provision of a wide range of services and initiatives that help promote and improve the general health and environment for our citizens.

We do this by providing a wide range of services through various services areas, from helping you with applications for land and marine planning, assistance on building standards, keeping Shetland clean and tidy, through to providing advice on subjects ranging from credit and pricing to safety and measurement.

Roads, Transport and Ports

Due to its unique location, getting around and to and from Shetland is important to our citizens and members of the community.

We provide a range of services to maintain and manage the public road network including snow clearing, road improvements and provision of street lights.

Our Transport section provide a range of methods of getting around the islands via, buses, ferries or air services, they also provide a management and planning function for producing a transport strategy by bringing key stakeholders together in the form of the ZetTans Partnership.

Shetland is an island with 900 miles of coastline and has several ports and many piers, these are managed and maintained through the Ports and Harbours section. These ports and piers are used by a variety of vessels and marine craft ranging from large oil tankers to fishing vessels and pleasure craft.
