Contaminated Land
From June 2000, new legislation affected how the Council deals with all aspects of contaminated land. From this date, the Council has been responsible for the assessment, inspection and investigation of contaminated land within the Shetland Islands Council area.
Land classed as contaminated will require to be remediated and entered on the Council’s remediation register. Our officers will be involved in discussion with owner and developers in setting remediation standards and targets, the service of notices where required and supervision of remediation.
The Section operates and contributes to a detailed Geographic Information System and classifies land based on extensive field work and document appraisal. Old maps, photographs, aerial surveys, geological information and anecdotal evidence are considered and reviewed.
The review and update of the action plan is on-going with a target completion date of April 2008.
