The Environmental Health Section carry out the function of enforcement of the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc 1974 and associated legislation for Shetland Islands Council.

Premises, which are subject to inspection by local authorities, include offices, retailing outlets, warehouses, hotels, catering establishments, sports and leisure facilities, consumer services and places of worship. The allocation of premises to the Environmental Health Division or the Health and Safety Executive depends on the work activity involved.

Service delivery broadly comprises:

• Programmed inspection of workplaces
• Investigation of workplace accidents and incidents
• Investigation of complaints relating to workplace safety and health
• Promotional and advisory work
