Litter & Fly Tipping
Illegal Dumping / Fly Tipping
Any materials deposited in or on any land which does not have a disposal licence or an exemption from licensing constitutes illegal dumping. This can and is very harmful to the environment and it may pollute drinking water supplies or other controlled waters. Any dumping of commercial waste should be reported to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (in Shetland on 01595 696926).
Domestic waste dumping should be reported to the Environmental Health Team on 01595 744800. Any dumping can be reported to us and we will forward any instances that do not fall to us to SEPA for investigation.
Pollution
The section deals with many diverse forms of pollution, some of which are dealt with in the Shoreline Cleanup section. Other typical types of incidents are leaking or dilapidated septic tanks, sewage spills, chemical spills, oil discharges (although many of these are passed to our contacts in the Scottish Environment Protection Agency SEPA), drainage defects, vibration and commonly noise which has it's own section.
Litter
All Environmental Health Officers and Assistants as well as the Police are authorised to issue fixed penalty notices for littering offences.
The Council fully supports Keep Scotland Beautiful and their "Dumb Dumpers" campaign - if you see anyone dumping or any refuse already dumped - please let us or KSB know
