The Fleet
Since the mid-1970's, Shetland Islands Council have owned and operated a fleet of ferries providing lifeline services between mainland Shetland and the islands.
We now have 12 vessels, operating from 16 terminals serving eight islands. Despite a total population of just under 3,500 people, the ships now make over 70,000 crossings each year and carry almost 750,000 passengers and over 350,000 vehicles.
The ferries have given business and social oppertunities to the mainland and isles, with 10% of the islands population commuting and 50% of our income derived from business users.
Our fleet ranges from small cargo workboats to large, modern vehicle ro/ro ferries. Each vessel has been designed to meet the challenges faced by the communities and businesses they serve.
All our vessels are designed, built and maintained to the highest standards, with highly competent and experienced crew. All this means that you can relax in comfort while on board and enjoy your journey.
