The Shetland Islands Council provides general needs, temporary, supported and sheltered accommodation. The service is also responsible for the future strategic direction of housing in Shetland.

To be considered for council housing in Shetland, you need to fill in a housing application form.  A joint form is used by the SIC and Hjaltland Housing Association.  You can be considered for housing by both landlords or just one.  You can pick up an application from either office or you can download one online at www.shetland.gov.uk/housing/Housing_Application_Pack.asp

If you are homeless or threatened with homelessness, please contact us as soon as possible for advice and information on your housing options.  Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to temporary accommodation and support.  We offer confidential housing advice and if you would like to discuss your housing options you can make an office or home appointment to see a Housing Officer.  If translation services are required, these can be arranged. 

Information on the various housing options available in Shetland can be found online in the Housing Options Guide at www.shetland.gov.uk/housingoptionsguide.  Any SIC properties that have a low demand are also advertised on the website – www.shetland.gov.uk/housing/lowdemandhousing.asp. If you do not have a computer and would like to view housing information available online, you can use the public access computer at our office.

HomeSwapper is a national scheme for mutual tenancy exchanges between public sector tenants across the UK and is available to both SIC and Hjaltland Housing Association tenants. Visit www.homeswapper.co.uk for more information.  If you are a SIC tenant living in a larger house than you need, and wish to move to a smaller house, you may be eligible for a payment of £700 (subject to budget availability) to help with the cost of moving.
