Shetland Housing Market
There is a busy private housing market in Shetland based on people building houses for themselves or buying existing houses that come up for sale.
The average number of house build completions in the over the past 5 years was 112 per year. In 2010/2011 there were 113 house completions. These were mostly privately build houses, or houses built by contractors and sold privately.
Over the past few years Hjaltland Housing Association have built new homes at Quoys and Grantfield in Lerwick, Sandwick, Gulberwick, Brae, Aith, and Cullivoe in Yell. In September 2006 the Council completed a small development at Sound in Lerwick, and hopes to build more new houses in Lerwick in the near future. Planning permission has been received for homes in Eshaness, Tingwall and in the formers Baptist Church in Lerwick.
