Shetland Island Games 2005 Ltd., organisers of the NatWest Island Games XI Invite you to the Media Briefing and Reception for The NatWest Island Games XI - Shetland 2005 14:00 17:00 Saturday 9 July 2005 Town Hall, Hillhead, Lerwick ZE1 0HB
To discuss the media operation for the Games and in particular arrangements for the Opening Ceremony
The approximate running time will be 14:00 15:00.
Following the Media Briefing for the NatWest Island Games XI- Shetland 2005
- Shetland Islands Council warmly invite the Games Accredited Media to a pre-games welcome reception also at the Town Hall from 15:00 17:00
It will provide an opportunity to experience a traditional warm Shetland welcome, food, refreshments and entertainment along with Games sponsors, business leaders and Council and other representatives.
Return transport has been organised to take media wishing to attend the media briefing from Clickimin Leisure Complex to the Town Hall. Buses will leave the Clickimin at 13:30 arriving at the Town Hall at approximately 13:50.
Buses have been arranged to transport media back to Clickimin Leisure Complex in good time for the Opening Ceremony. Buses will be leaving at 17:00.

Between 9 and 15 July 2005, 2500 athletes and officials from 24 island communities throughout the world will descend upon Shetland to compete in The NatWest Island Games, a biennial international multi-sport event, larger in scale than the Winter Olympics.
Shetland is the first Scottish member island to host the games; and with a population of approximately 23,000 it is the smallest island population ever to host this large-scale event.

The 24 member islands of the International Island Games Association are:
Aland, Alderney, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Froya, Gibraltar, Gotland, Greenland, Guernsey, Hitra, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Jersey, Orkney, Prince Edward Island, Rhodes, Saaremaa, Sark, Shetland, St. Helena, Western Isles, Ynys Mon.
Sports for the NatWest Island Games XI, Shetland 2005: 15 different team and individual sports have been chosen from a list of 18 set down by the IGA:
Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Cycling, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Sailboarding, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis and Volleyball.

The Shetland Islands are situated 200 miles North of Aberdeen and 225 miles West of Bergen. Made up of a diverse group of over 100 islands, bordered by jagged cliffs and bleached white beaches, Shetland is ruled by water.
