Day 2 ­ NatWest Shetland Island Games
Results Overview and Scottish Performances

Athletics

In the women's javelin, Emma Gray of Shetland took the first gold for a Scottish team at the Games, throwing 42.42m, a new personal best. Helen Davies of the Isle of Wight took silver with a throw of 40.01 and Gemma Tingay of Guernsey took the bronze with a throw of 36.57.

In the men's 10,000m, Ian Williamson narrowly missed out on a bronze, coming in fourth after running 34:07.68. Michael Sanchez of Gibraltar took gold in a time of 30:59.87, Kin Godtfredeson of Greenland took the silver in
31:01.06 and Oluf Thunegard took the bronze in 32:59.30

In the final of the men's shot putt, Dhanni Moar of Shetland came in 8th and Brydon Wright in 12th. Erik Larsson of Gotland took the gold, Juri Kuusk of Saaremaa took the silver and Andy Frost of the Isle of Wight took the bronze.

Faye Richardson of Shetland won her heat in the women's 100m and goes through to the final.

Badminton

In the first day of the team even, Shetland beat Orkney and St Helena 5-0, winning every match 2-0. In a close second game, Shetland lost to Guernsey 3-2.

Orkney also lost their next game against Guernsey 0-5 but fought back to beat St Helena 4-1.

Cycling

In the Men's Individual Time Trial, Carlos Riise of Shetland took silver in a time of 56:10.4 behind Andrew Roche of the Isle of Man who took the gold in a time of 55.09.6. Sam Firby of Jersey took the bronze in a time of
56:31.4

Fellow team members Scott Jamieson finished 17th, George Hoseason 22nd and John William Simpson and Andrew Grant finishing 29th and 30th respectively.

In the Men's Team Time Trial, Shetland took bronze in a time of 3:02:05.5 behind the Isle of Man who took gold in 2:51:33.8 and Jersey who took the silver in 2:58:00.1

In the Women's Individual Time Trial, Ingrid Bruce of Shetland finished 14th with Sylvia Murray and Beccy May of Orkney finishing 12th and 13th respectively.

Lynn Patchett of Bermuda took the gold, Chlime Gkiourmpouz of Rhodes took silver and Ann Bowditch of Guernsey took the bronze.

Football

Shetland's men's football team had a fantastic start to the competition, beating the Falkland Islands 4-0 while Guernsey beat Orkney 3-0.

In the first round of the women's competition, Bermuda beat Shetland 5-0

Bowls

In the men's fours competition, Shetland won their first group stage, beating Alderney 34-2 but lost to Guernsey in their next game, 10-22.

In a close game in the men's fours, Orkney lost 14-17 to the Isle of Wight
but fought back to beat Ynys Mon 27-10. Western Islands lost their first
round against Guernsey 9-34 but went on to beat Alderney 21-7 in their next game.

In the women's fours the Shetland team won their first game beating Orkney 17-7.

Orkney's women's fours were narrowly defeated by Isle of Wight who beat them 20-18.

Sailing

After the first day of the Laser Standard Rig, Scott Nicolson of Shetland finished in 8th position with William Mouatt finishing 14th. Ian Rushbrook of Orkney finished 12th with fellow team member, Lee Thomson finishing 16th.

Yiannis Koutselinis of Rhodes leads, followed by Bernt Hellman of Aland and Joel Lucas of Jersey.

Shooting

In the ISSF Universal Trench Team event, Peter Davies and Jim Work picked up a bronze medal for Shetland finishing with a total of 166.

In a close competition, Barry Martin and David Walton from the Isle of Man took gold with a final total of 169 and Nicholas Dewe and Stefan Roberts of Sark took the silver with 168 points.

Peter Davies shot the highest total of the day with a score of 91, 4 points clear of the Barry Martin's total.

In another close competition, Orkney's Derek Firth and Victor Smith took bronze in the English Sporting Men's Team event finishing with a total of 147, just behind Ynys Mon who won gold with a total of 150 and Isle of Wight who took silver with a total of 149. Shetland's team finished sixth overall.

Squash

In the team event Shetland lost 5-0 to Guernsey and 3-2 to the Isle of Man but pulled back in their final round of the day to beat Gibraltar 4-1.

Meanwhile Orkney lost their match against Bermuda 0-5

Table Tennis

It was a fantastic first day of competition for the Shetland team, beating top seeds, Isle of Wight 6-1 in their first match of the team event. Craig Christie beat Alex Rorke 3-0 and Roger Hookey 3-2 and Igor Kubelka beat Roger Hookey 3-1 and Alex Rorke 3-0.

In the ladies singles, Josie Bruce lost her match to Isle of Wight's Julie Thorn 1-3.

In the mixed doubles, Craig Christie and Claire Thomson beat Roger Hookey and Julie Thorn 3-1.

In their next game, Shetland remained strong to beat Rhodes 6-1 and in their final game of the day Shetland beat Isle of Man 5-2.

The team are now well on the way to winning a medal.

Meanwhile Orkney lost 0-7 in their first team match against Greenland and narrowly missed out in the second game, losing 3-4 to the Faroe Islands. In their final game of the day Orkney lost 2-5 to Guernsey.

Volleyball

In the men's volleyball, Shetland lost their first match against Greenland 0-3. Orkney also lost their first match against Aland 0-3.

Meanwhile in the women's competition the Shetland team also lost their match against Saaremaa 0-3.

After the first day of competition the medal tables stands at:

 

1. Isle of Man ­4 gold, 2 silver. Total = 6

2. Bermuda - 2 gold. Total = 2

3. Shetland ­ 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze. Total = 4

14. Orkney ­ 1 bronze. Total = 1
