News Release - Monday 11 July
GOLD AND SILVER FOR IDENTICAL TWINS FROM THE CAYMAN ISLANDS NATWEST ISLAND GAMES SHETLAND 2005
Sibling rivalry has taken on a new meaning for two athletes from the Cayman Islands who are competing in the NatWest Island Games in Shetland this week.
Identical twins Carlos and Carl Morgan (18) sprinted alongside each other in the 200 metres final at the NatWest Island Games in Shetland this evening
(11 July 2005), taking Gold and Silver medals respectively.
Harcourt Wason, the Athletics Team Coach for the Cayman Islands Games, said:
'This is a great day for the twins and a very exciting time for the Cayman Islands. In all my time coaching I have never had two siblings competing against each other and to take first and second in their first event is fantastic. Let's hope they can keep this up!.'
The Morgan brothers will also be competing together in the 100m, long jump and javelin events later in the week and they are expecting to compete against each other in every final.
Carlos Morgan said: 'This is brilliant! We are now looking to meet each other in the final of all the other events we are taking part in and we are aiming for nothing less than the gold and silver in every event. It doesn't matter too much who wins.
'I now have my sights set on the Games javelin record which now stands at 59.42m. I have been regularly throwing 58 and 59 metres in training. Last year I threw a personal best of 59.72 metres so I am pretty confident.'
The brothers train together and feel their performances have been picking up all season. Carl has been slightly stronger in the 100m and long jump while Carlos edges ahead in the 200 metres and javelin. Being used to temperatures of 97 degrees, the big climate change they have had to cope with in Scotland certainly hasn't affected the boys' current form in training since arriving in Shetland!
This is a first NatWest Island Games for the boys. However their older brother Neville (20) competed in Guernsey in 2003 in the 100m, long jump and
4 x 100m relay, when the Cayman Islands team won the gold medal and set a new Games record.
There is obviously a warm and very strong bond between the Morgan brothers, but is there any resentment when it comes to the final results? Carl Morgan
said: 'No, it really doesn't matter who wins, we are just sharing our talent.'
They not only share their athletics training sessions and disciplines they are also both studying physical education at Lindsey Wilson in Kentucky.
It was another great day for Shetland and Orkney at the Games today.
Michelle Sandison from Shetland won the gold in the women's 10,000 metres, with Helen Cromarty from Orkney winning Gold in the Shot Put. Faye Richardson (another twin) from Unst, the northern most island of Shetland won Silver in the 100 metres.
In the team events Shetland won Silver in Badminton and in the ISSF Skeet in the Clay Pigeon Shooting competition; with a Bronze coming in Badminton and Indoor Bowls Men's Fours.
