Where are Council jobs advertised?

  • Our external vacancies are advertised on www.shetland.gov.uk/jobs, shetland.myjobscotland.gov.uk, in the Shetland Times, on SIBC and at JobCentrePlus
  • In addition to the above, some of our external jobs are advertised in national publications, and websites such as scotcareers.co.uk, S1jobs, search.co.uk, stv jobs, totaljobs.

  • Yes, you can sign up for a job alert at www.myjobscotland.gov.uk
  • You can choose to receive an e-mail alert about jobs in a certain:-

Where can I get help using the online recruitment system?

Asking for a Reference?

  • We will ask you to provide two referees. 
  • One referee must be your most recent employer.
  • If you haven’t been employed since leaving school, please give the name of a tutor as one of your referees.
  • References can’t be accepted from a close relative.
  • If you are shortlisted for interview we will contact your referees so that we can look at the reference before the interview takes place.
  • If you would rather we did not contact your referee before the interview, you can say this on your application form, however, we must see references for all applicants to childcare posts before the interview. 
  • Before giving someone’s name as a referee, please contact them to make sure that they are wiling to provide a reference and that they will be available.
  • If possible, please give us an e-mail address for your referees as this will speed up the recruitment process.

What should I bring to interview?

  • You should bring original qualification certificates.  The panel chairperson will arrange to have copies taken and will return the originals to you at interview.
  • You should bring proof that you are eligible to work in the UK – this can be a P45, a pay slip, a P60 an NI card, a passport or birth certificate.
  • If the post needs a Disclosure Scotland check, you must bring documents such as a birth certificate and any certificates showing change of name, verified with passport, driving licence or credit card.  The panel chairperson will arrange to have copies taken and will return the originals to you at interview.

What should I put in my application?

  • A Person Specification will be attached to the job advert.  This is the information that managers will use to decide who to interview.  Please include information on how you meet the essential and desirable requirements in the Person Specification.
  • There is limited space in each section of the online application.
  • At the end of the application there will be space for you to enter any additional details.
  • You might want to type your application into word and read it through before pasting the information into your online application.

Will the council give me help with moving house?

  • It will be clearly stated in each individual job advert whether or not a Relocation Package applies to the post.
  • If it does not, we will pay interview expenses from within Shetland.
  • If it does, we will pay interview expenses and relocation expenses from the United Kingdom up to a maximum of £8,000.  If you live outwith the UK, you must pay your own expenses until you reach the UK.
