Blue-Green Algae discovered in Loch of Cliff, Unst
The Council’s Environmental Health Service has received notification that the water in the Loch of Cliff, Unst is contaminated with Blue Green Algae growth.
As a precautionary measure, notices will be posted in local shops and next to the loch warning that contact with the algal scum should be avoided.
Adjoining landowners and fishing interests have been advised of the situation, as have the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and Shetland NHS Board.
At this stage there is no adverse effect on water supplies.
