Ollaberry pupils are Champions of Scotland
The seven pupils of Ollaberry Primary School, along with three staff, are heading to London next month after their school was named the regional champion in the Total Green School Awards for 2014.
They’ve been awarded £1,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the prize-giving ceremony at London Zoo. The UK champions will be chosen from four schools representing Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with a prize of £5,000.
The school’s award-winning project focussed on marine litter. Pupils sewed and sold recycled bags and made an animated film about the effects of marine litter on wildlife around the coast. The film, called ‘A Turtle’s Tale of a Plastic Bag’ is available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=keRWIwdrVHM as is the video diary of the project at www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2zA1pv8caM
During the four day trip to London in June, they’re planning a trip to the London Eye, the Sealife Centre, the Houses of Parliament, the National History Museum, and the West End show ‘The Lion King’.
Ollaberry Head Teacher Marianne Raikes says they’re really looking forward to the trip: “The bairns have had a fantastic time working on this project, and winning the Scottish title is just tremendous. Fingers crossed we can impress the judges and win the national championship – we’ve got plans for other environmental projects, and if we won the £5,000 prize we’d like to see if we could use it to provide some renewable energy sources for the school.”
