An event to celebrate the achievements of learners taking part in ESOL, (English for Speakers of Other Languages), classes in Shetland was held in the Town Hall earlier this month.

Despite the terrible weather, around 80 learners, friends and invited guests, representing 22 countries attended the event.  Director of Shetland College, David Gray presented learners with certificates, including recognition for those taking part in Family ESOL and students who had progressed to delivering their own lessons at evening classes.

A certificate was also presented to the “Employer of the Year” Allan McKimm, who provided exceptional support for his employees to attend ESOL classes.

Tutors and learners then put together a short program of entertainment which included an amazing juggling act, a Hungarian sing-along with the audience, traditional Arabic, Lithuanian, Czech and Nepali songs and Scots and Polish poetry readings.

Many learners also brought along food from their own countries to share with their fellow students and guests.

Adult Learning Manager, Nancy Heubeck is delighted that tutors and learners were able to work together to deliver a successful and enjoyable event.

“It is great to see such a strong international community of learners supporting each other in their studies” said Mrs Heubeck,   “the students really appreciate the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with their friends and family.

"This year we have had many learners moving up levels and some have progressed to certificated courses at Shetland College.

"Everybody was eager to contribute their skills and talents to make the event a success and the buffet was a delicious way to celebrate cultural diversity.”
